Ravenor Primary School

PE Rationale

Intent:

Our aim is to give each child the tools and understanding to develop their health and fitness, physical literacy and emotional well-being in Physical Education (PE) and life.

Here at Ravenor Primary school, we believe that physical activity improves health and concentration as well as promoting physical growth and development. Our lessons follow a skills-based curriculum through the use of Real PE, which aids and supports our sports-based lessons delivered by a professional.

Implementation:

In line with the National Curriculum, we have tailored our long-term overview to ensure that the progression in fundamental skills are incorporated in our progressive sports-based lessons. This allows us to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that is exciting for our children. We ensure that each class has timetabled 2 hours of PE each week, including one term of swimming in Year 4 where all children will be given the opportunity to swim 25m with a range of different strokes and have basic water safety skills.

At Ravenor Primary School, we are committed to delivering Real PE lessons that are fun, active, and dynamic with an emphasis on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition, and cooperative learning. The Real PE approach allows us to teach PE to include challenge and support for every child.

Our sports-based lessons, taught by a professional, are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform. These lessons align with our core values: our whole child approach to PE and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. As the children progress through each key stage, the PSD Group plan, deliver and support all lessons, to ensure they are progressive and challenging for each child’s development.

The PSD Group deliver high quality extracurricular clubs every day which allows children in Key Stage 1 and 2 to have the opportunity to further develop and experience a wide range of sports and activities. In addition, The PSD Group run 90 minutes of structured lunchtime activities which helps to engage and increase the participation levels in physical activities and social development. Vital life skills: learning how to control emotions when winning and losing, resilience, leadership and teamwork are also included.

At Ravenor Primary School we are pleased to be a part of the Willow Tree Sports Partnership. This partnership allows us to develop our Physical Education within the school by supporting our staff with the Real PE delivery, developing children’s Working With Others skills through our Playground Leaders and providing the opportunity to participate in local sporting competitions.
